Having spent the past two decades living in and visiting 25 countries, across 40 cities and three continents, I have witnessed a simple yet profound truth: free market economies thrive, while isolationist policies lead to stagnation and decline.
Free trade, without exception, brings out the best in people. It fosters creativity, collaboration, and shared risks and rewards. When markets are open, individuals and businesses innovate, compete, and push the boundaries of what is possible. Competition drives efficiency, and collaboration across borders fuels economic growth.
But the greatest value of free markets extends beyond economics—it is about shared prosperity and security. When countries engage in open trade, they develop a vested interest in each other’s success. This interdependence creates stability, reducing the likelihood of conflict. History has shown that peace endures in the absence of economic isolation and hostility. When industries and nation-states are interconnected through mutual benefit, the world becomes a more prosperous and harmonious place.
To be clear, this is not a defense of predatory capitalism. There is a stark difference between exploitative economic practices and fair, mutually beneficial trade. Free markets function best when all parties bring value to the table, engaging in commerce based on merit and innovation rather than monopolistic control or coercion.
As an adjunct professor of International Trade Finance, I never imagined witnessing a trade war between two of the world’s closest economic partners—Canada and the United States. Something has gone drastically wrong. Protectionist policies and economic nationalism threaten decades of progress, jeopardizing not only economic growth but also the very fabric of international cooperation.
If we want a future of shared prosperity, we must resist the temptation of economic isolation. The path forward is clear: embrace free trade, encourage fair competition, and foster global partnerships. Only then can we ensure that our world remains a place where innovation, opportunity, and stability flourish for generations to come.
